26th May, around 110 international students came from UPM to have a visit at USM. As an Student Ambassador, i volunteered to be present at the event. That was my first involvement after got selected.
Waked up early morning...excited and anxious. Gathered at SK1 around 8.15 am and met with other senior SA and SA. SK1 was just like old days....whenever you have a 8am class there, you will know what i mean. They usually do not turn on the air-con at this early hour. The funny thing was, they said, you have booked the SK1, but you didn't go to other department to book the air-con. Orz! They are such brilliant peoples.
We waited and around 9, the international students arrived. I tried to mix into them and try to answer whatever question they have. The interesting part was, there was a girl, that i sat beside with, she prefer not to talk during the speech given, ok, fine... i understand that, but somehow she prefer to write me small note on the question she would like to ask about. Maybe it was my bad..... but how am i going to help if i didn't mention who i am and why i was there?
After the welcoming presentation, we were arranged to walk them to USM Museum. So, i walked under the 35 degree Celsius of hot sun together with them and talked along the walk. I manage to get to know some of them. They are friendly and they love to take pictures.... i was asked several times to take the picture together with them, who basically have no idea who am i. Perhaps they just needed some peoples in the picture no matter who you were as long as it was taken in USM?
After visiting the Museum, here came the embarrassing part-The lunch that the USM International Office prepared for our guests. There were around 110 students plus 10+ staff from UPM, and the tables prepared were around 10, so it means more than 10 peoples in a round table. How can that work??? The caterer of the lunch was obviously short of staffs and the lunch was actually a mess. Me and others SA were standing there and i saw quite a number of peoples were having rice, clear soup(soup with nothing inside) and 2-3 leafs of Vegie (mainly cucumber slice) as their lunch....OMG, this is how we treat our precious guests for lunch?
Apart from the lunch part, i think the program was overall successful. I only found out at the end of the day that this event was not organized by us, it was in fact a program of International office of USM. We were wanted at the very last minutes to involve into this. We even have to select an EMCEE among ourselves for the event which was not our responsibility. We were informed at a very short notice and all the student ambassadors that involved in that day were volunteered to do so, not selected or forced. The notice was given on Tuesday evening.... and the even was on Thurday. I found out the notice only on Wednesday morning because i didn't check my email on tuesday night. I replied right at it and Voila, i was there on the beautiful thursday morning. Frankly speaking i was really shocked when i opened my email account on Wednesday morning....I have around 20 emails of same title from different senders. It occupied my first page of email. This tells me that i should perhaps check my email morning after waking up and night before i go to bed so that i won't miss any important notice.
Anyway, whatever it was....It had passed. We gain knowledge every single day and we think after we exposed to something new.
